AFAIK there's no time of day guarantee at all unless you've paid for special delivery. Over Christmas they'll be working until 9pm or later doing parcels.
Amazon send most things via Royal Mail's 48 hour service, not I've had 5pm before. They're processing the highest number of parcels per day that they'll do at any point during the year in the fortnight up to Xmas so its not uncommon for them to run late. Was it guaranteed next day delivery or just normal first class? If it was ordinary first class, RM don't actually promise next day delivery.
